The National Archives and Records Administration only stores Military Service Records, they cannot make changes or corrections to these records or to your discharge status. You will need to apply to the review board for your respective service branch for corrections or changes.
•If your military service record requires a change or correction, you will need to submit DD Form 149, Application for Correction of Military Records to the relevant service branch.
•If you need to change your discharge status you will generally need to submit DD Form 293, Application for the Review of Discharge or Dismissal from the Armed Forces of the United States to the relevant service branch.
(DO NOT submit these forms to the National Archives. Be sure to use the appropriate address for your service branch as listed on the back of the form.)

Thanks for this very helpful information!
ReplyDeleteAnytime! I still have more information that maybe helpful to add to this blog so please feel free to visit again and to spread the word!
ReplyDelete15 years is the time limit for discharge reveiw Board after that you only have Board correction military records, The BCMR is where you sends mistakes you find in your records that could have affected yout type of discharge. You have 3 years to file after your dicovery of the mistake or they will say its untimely.
ReplyDeletei was dicharged with an OTH discharge. since than i have completed my BA in nursing science and have no run in with the law... also i volunteer once a month with the local sheriff dept in the SAR team. what are the odds if any of getting my discharge changed over to maybe an honorable. i was discharged due to medication missing and i was the lowest one out of RN (LT) and a DOC (CAPT) so i kinda got the shaft but ill accept it... it was through a NJP also. anyone had any luck with this process?
ReplyDeleteYou have pretty much done all of the right things by volunteering your time to really good programs and even getting a BA in nursing science! Now, since you feel you may have gotten a raw deal with your NJP, you may want to consult a lawer about getting your OTH overturned to either and administrative discharge or best case scenario, an honorable discharge.... I think you have one hell of a shot to get things turned around.
ReplyDeleteI was discharged OTH from the Navy for controlled substance use. after a Disciplinary Review Board, I admitted I had a drinking problem, which later lead to the drug use as well. and I willingly admitted myself to the 28 day inpatient program on base. After almost 3 months, I finally am able to enter the program, ready to make the right change and continue serving. Only an hour in to the program, my lieutenant picked me up telling me the Captain wanted to seperate me for failing a Urinalysis screen DURING the time I had to wait to enter the program.
ReplyDeleteSince seperation, I have succesfully completed a one year-inpatient rehab program, I'm now 14 months clean and sober, and I volunteer as an unpaid intern to help others in the program. It's not the Navy's fault I made the choices I made, but I strongly feel it was a mistake to take away the chance to rehabilitate when I attempted to do something about it.Does anyone think I have a fighting case to change my DD214?

ReplyDeletei have a ? my husband got an oth discharge for going awole right before deployment his reason for leaving was because his mother found out that she had cancer and his little sister was put in to foster care where her foster mom had her put in a mental hospital. he was scared for his family's well being and could not leave knowing the shape his family was in. what is his chances of getting his discharge changed and what could he do to make his chances higher of getting it changed
ReplyDeleteOk so I am being summary court martialed in the USMC for a double drug pop...I will be getting out in the next few months with an OTH. I am horrified at the thought of dishonoring my country, and tainting my service record first and foremost. But I am also concerned about finding a decent job when i get out. I need GOOD information on what I can be doing now and the months following my OTH discharge to help myself. Also I would like to restore some honor in my service. I served 2 years 6 months before getting in trouble and deployed. Any way I can upgrade my discharge? please email me if you can help me with GOOD information. Thank you!

Jon,
ReplyDeleteI'm getting ready to file for an upgrade now and I've done a good bit of research. First check out the decisions on the Navy Discharge Review Board:
http://boards.law.af.mil/NAVY_DRB.htm
I've found that most are denied because they ask for something the board can't change or provide no evidence.
The bad news for you is drug use seems to be hard to change. You will need post service time to show you have changed. The American Legion is helping me:Spencer, Ray D.[rspencer@legion.org]
They can provide you with good advice and help you get the packet together.
I received an OTH after 10 years in the Navy. It was for meth abuse. I'm guilty. I was given a quiet exit, no NJP and court martial. I received no reduction in rank (E-6). I re-enlisted twice, so I have two honorable discharges. On my last enlistment, I made E-6, got my EAWS and ESWS designations, received a Navy Commendation Medal, and was ranked #1 of 82 in my department. Then I started using meth and lost it all. That was 7 years ago. My drug abuse eventually led me to prison. Today I am clean, have completed a one year in patient program, attend regular meetings, was released from parole early for good behavior, have a great job and am trying to clean up the wreckage of my past. Throwing away my career is one of the hardest things that I live with today. I know there are people out there who have successfully petitioned to have their OTH overturned and I would love to hear how you did it. This is the next indicated step in my recovery. I know I will never wear the uniform again and realize I lost that right, but for 9 of those 10 years I served with honor and distinction. Do you think that will count for anything when requesting an upgrade? Also, should I request an upgrade to General Under Honorable or get really ballsy and go for the Honorable? Thanks for any input, help, advice you can offer. theminordetails@yahoo.com
ReplyDeletecan one get the forms need for oth on intenet if so where do i go to find them here is a email address bjm2009@suddenlink.net
ReplyDeleteI know a former E-6 Marine, thinking he was discharged Other Than Honorable but not quite sure. He was caught cheating with his best friend's wife (best friend was also an E-6 Marine). I found out this jerk has applied for VA education benefits. Can he get those? He truly doesn't deserve anything after what he did. Nor should he be allowed to get his discharge changed.
ReplyDeleteIt depends on his discharge. If he has an OTH he IS still maybe able to get a certain percentage of VA benefits. Its really hard to say....
ReplyDeleteI had an OTH from the navy in 2002 for commision of serious offense. The charges were completely dropped and I never even wen tto trial and I got the arrest expunged. So I got discharged for no reason. But luckily for me I was able to get into the National Guard with a waiver in 2004.And I been on a deployment to Iraq in 2005 and a deployment to Afghanistan in 2009.I also have gotten a Bachelors of Science in criminal justice. So not only do i have an honorable discharge I have 2 of them and i'm a combat vet.So maybe you can try getting into the National Guard with a waiver becaused they are governed by the states and have different laws than Active Duty military.the laws may have changed but its worth a try.
ReplyDeletedoes anyone have any successful OTH discharge upgrade knowledge? seems the NDRB always denies
ReplyDeleteHere's one for ya. I pissed off my Staff NCO and was listed UA when I went to LeJuene for a medical appointment. When I returned, all my gear had been secured and I was told I was on Barrack restriction. Next morning I reported in to sign in per instruction and was read 8 more charges I had not committed including, "Disrespect to an NCO" for supposedly rolling my eyes at attention. Now I was facing NJP, but I never did any of those things. So I went to base legal and hired a former SJA, a retired LT Col to give advice and file subponea while i requested a low level court martial, summary, to despute my charges. At the end of my self representation (base lawyers don't have to show up for a low level court martial. Mine didn't so I defended myself.) Out of all the minor charges, I was convicted of showing up in the wrong uniform for inspection, dropped to E 1 and given an OTH. I have contacted lawyers in the past for Naval review and appealed the naval review for change by mail. The denied it and lawyers who do specialize in going to DC start around 10K. No luck either way. Now I am a lawyer and was once an FBI candidate for Special Agent program. I didn't make the Agent program for family reasons. Couldn't leave my kid with his mother. My DC was nearly 20 yrs ago. What happens if I appeal in DC before? Untimely? Considering I did nothing major (no drugs or stealing ect.. in my original charges) what happens to the OTH? And here's a page for all you who need a DD214 w/o explaination. http://www.archives.gov/research/order/standard-form-180.pdf
ReplyDeleteI received a general discharge, can I get this changed? What do I have to do? I went awol before my ship was set to go out, about a week before. The reason was I was married at the time and was in process of fixing his papers, big mistake, anyways, he was deported so I had to come get him out. My leave was not approved but I felt I had to do what I needed and since I was really young, and stupid, I messed up. Please help. I loved serving my country and would love to have a second chance.
ReplyDeletei have an honorable discharge from the us army and and oth discharge from the us navy. Am i eligible to use the va hospital? Which discharge supercedes the other?
ReplyDeleteWhich discharge was your last? The VA goes by your most recent discharge. If it's OTH you will not be able to use the VA or receive your GI bill. If you got a bonus you'll have to pay it back.
ReplyDeleteThats not completly accurate. If your a disabled veteran with an OTH and depending on your disability percentage you are eligible for VA medical service. As for the GI Bill, you would not be eligible but are still able to use the Vocational Rehabilitatin Program.
DeleteHere is my story: A person put a stink capsule in my rack. I discovered it before I accidentally broke it, found who did it and tossed it back on his rack. Next thing I know I am accused of putting an entire shoe-box of broken glass in his rack and was I was OTH'd out of the Navy. It has been nearly twenty years. Is there anything I can do about this?
ReplyDeleteI was discharged with an OTH over 15 years ago, for "fighting" overseas. What really happened was I "stopped" a fight that involved my Petty Officer and an unknown participant. At the exact moment I was "pulling my Petty Officer off of the civilian getting beat, two Navy Officers entered the bathroom where the altercation was taking place. We were all told to go back to the ship. The next day I was told not to go on "ship leave." Ultimately, I went to "Captain's Mass," and received an OTH discharge.
ReplyDeleteIn Captain's Mass, I was told that I had been in a fight. I had no answer, as I felt that if I told the truth- I would been implicating my Petty Officer. He continued to serve, and I was flown back to the United States.
Of course I want an Honarable Discharge, but at the expense of being dishonarable to myself?- forget about it.
The Military is an extrodinary path for individuals, not knowing their career goals. I went in, and came out a better man. No matter what I have in terms of a "discharge," I succeeded.
I am now in a position of leadership, and would have handeled the matter in a similair manner, given the same situation.
"Go Navy!"
I recently tried to get a oth discharge upgraded no such luck. They really don"t care how a person has lived there life trouble free or being an outstanding citizen. It has been almost 28 years ago. Joined when i was 17 in the delayed entry program.Went ua at the end of my enlistment. Turned myself in went back to work no punishment what so ever. just recieved a oth to keep from going to trial. wish i could do it over just young an wanted out.
ReplyDeleteI signed up for a 4 year enlistment and entered basic training on 03/04 1996 and was discharged on with an OTH on 03/03/2000(misconduct).I noticed they were trying to hurry up and push my EAS thru before I finished my enlistment(hence the one day difference).I recently was looking through some of my old paperwork and saw that I was in the Delayed Entry Program in Feb of 1996 and on that DEP paperwork it stated that the DEP program counted toward my enlistment. So in essence I completed my 4 years of service before my OTH discharge. What are your thoughts about this? I know I'm being picky but would I have a chance of getting my disharge overturned due to this?
ReplyDeleteI was given a general discharge for medical reasons ( I have asthma) I hadnt had any trouble with it up to six years prior to going to boot camp. I was in the delayed entry program and went and did all the exercises and stuff they asked of me with no problems. What happened was I got ronchitis and wasn't completely well when they let me off light duty. My platoon got in trouble and we were all on the quarter deck and I had an asthma attack. They found out that I had a previous history and sent me home. Is there anything I can do?
ReplyDeleteQuestion OTH discharge status: I received a OTH for unsatisfactory participation in 1997, while in the reserves and I would like to get this changed. At the time my older brother who was also a Desert Storm veteran passed away. My mother also found out she had cancer and my father went on disability. It was a really tough time for me. Since then I have graduated with two bachelor degrees and I am finishing my masters degree in sociology. I wonder if I would make a good candidate for Discharge Status Change under these conditions?????
ReplyDeleteI am being given a chap 10 with a OTH discharge but I want to know can I have it changed and how . I was in the army for 6 yrs. And when I did what I did to get the OTH I was on a lot of meds and don't even remember doing it . But when I asked for the general to plz take that I was not in my right mind he still gave me a OTH instead of a General discharge.
ReplyDeleteWow I'm in the same situation. Just not suite if the CG will approve the CH 10.
