Just as a heads up- even the best private security companies cannot access military records. If you're not applying for a government job, there is only rational option for those with an OTH: don't mention your service.
A BCD is essentially a criminal record. It is therefore on your civilian background check. An OTH is not.
You sure are starting off with your employer the right way by omitting or outright lying on your application. Your past income and who you received it from comes up in a background check by the way...
I have OTH from Army reserves..I'm not sure what steps to take next, As I want to upgrade my status to honorable..I got my OTH due to missing drill...no drugs, near perfect record..not long after I got home from Iraq I was diagnosed with a line of duty injury and later PTSD which I am now on 3 meds for...to make matters worse at the time my wife had post partum depression from our first child and that was a huge hardship. I tried explain to my unit that I wasn't psyically or mentally able to drill yet and they just told me that I'm getting close to missing to many drills, seems like the next thing I know I get a letter with orders telling me I'm being demoted 3 pay grades several letters actually but they basicly arrive at the same time next is the OTH. I think I probably need a lawyer to get my status changed as I feel I was given a OTH unfairly. Any comments or thoughts???
I recieved an OTH back in Mar. 2010. I have a job with a major Defense Contractor, and recieved a Security Clearance. For all those men/women who are worried about OTH for missing drills, and trying to get a decent job.....just be honest on your app.
I popped on a piss test, i signed oth discharge papers back in january, how long will it take for them to finnally discharge me, n will they issue out a warrant for my arrest if i stop showing up to drill n can they reverse my oth to dishonorable if i stop showing up, i need wise advise
I am in the process of getting a discharge under OTH for missing too many drills and I'm fine with that, I just wanted to know if I could get a job as a high school teacher with it.
I received an OTH over missing drills from the Marine Reserves. If you are planning on having an upgrade your best shot is to General under honorable conditions. As a first step research your service's board online info, there you will be able to find apps of other service members and constumize your own for top success rate. Here is the Navy's http://boards.law.af.mil/NAVY_DRB.htm
I was getting an oth for missing drills back in 2004 but shortly after my unit was activated and 11 months later I had a deserter warrant because my unit trashed my paperwork. Long story short, I was given an oth after I proved to the command I was already supposed to have separated a year earlier. Never thought too much about it afterwards. Oth separations are not criminal charges nor are they punitive ( bcd or dh). Bcd are for multiple misdemeanors and dh for felony convinctions. Adseps are neither and akin to simply being fired because for one reason or another things didn't work out. I was being separated for missing drills
I am in the process of being put out the army reserves for missng drills. My case is crazy because my husband got deployed with the military and my SFC was letting me make up my drill during the week but he never went in the computer system ad changed my U's to excuse absenses but I was getting paid. So now he is gone and a new line leader is here. She stated that it doesn't matter if I made up my drills they were still unexcused. So my packet is at the top of the chain line. How can I talk with them about getting an general discharge? I have a masters and is currently working on my PHD I want a good career for me and my family.
Currently waiting for my commander to determine my fate of an oth or not. I cant stand drill, poor excuse not to attend im fully aware. But as a 20yr old, whose main focus is currently school, and beginning my real estate investment ideas. I feel that Army reserve is a waste of time. I was always interested in the idea of fighting, serving, and being something more then what I am. But serving in a reserve unit, just makes it all feel like a waste. My only current concern is my life-long goal is to become a police officer. So far I contacted the Nyc Police Dept, and asked if they would hire OTH applicants. The lady responded with yes, but I will call again to confirm. Any thoughts on joining any PD with an OTh?
i got a job with the department of justice with the bureau of prisons with an oth for missing drills they didnt care about about the reserves only active duty discharge
My heart started to beat fast..I want to apply for federal corrections with the bureau of prisons..however I'm scared because I have an oth from the navy reserves....Are you sure they don't care about the reserves,,did you put it on your application??
As most reservists know, its a complete joke! I have a farm that requires my attention, an to got to drill and stand the frick around and be stupid...i swear i could take 10 children in there and get more done than 180 marines can, its a waste of time and a joke. I am going to stop going into drill, does anyone know what will happen? does a deneral discharge hurt my chances of getting loans?
I received an OTH from the marine reserves about 15 years ago. I have gone through several background checks for major employers and it has never been an issue. I quit drilling because I was being harassed for requesting mast against a senior nco. It was a miserable experience and I worried about it for a long time, but it never amounted to anything.
I havent been processed for an OTH yet, but ive made the decision to not go back to drill because I was forced into the reserves cause my brother was Active at the time and I didnt feel welcome because of some hickups. Ive been in for 4 years and Im not a bad person, im on the color guard, do extra drills, went to schools, and tried my best to be the best, but its not working out. From what ive read it doesnt show up on your record and I should be fine with getting jobs (already have one). Will this affect me later in life?
I went into the Reserves then had to move out of state when I asked for help finding a another unit they told me that was my responsiblilty so I found one and they didn't have room for me so I was given a oth discharge not only that but I recently filed taxes and the department of defense took 1287 dollars out of my return I was discharded dec 20 2010 I was also taken from a PFC to a Pv1 what can I do about the oth and the money they took
I have been out from the Army on an honorable discharge for 2 years now. I had inquired about the selected reserves but ultimately decided not to pursue it. I just received 2 certified letters one a month and another 2 months late saying I had accrued 8 unexcused absences and one more will ensure I receive an OTH. I read that you are still eligible for the post 9/11 GI bill and I believe in Illinois to receive insurance until 30 under your parents. What benefits do I lose with an OTH? Does it show up on background checks? Can I use my old DD214 with my honorable? What other benefits will I lose with an OTH?
Yes you can use your DD214 from active duty to recieve your benefits. The Post 911 GI bill was awarded to you when you completed your enlistment. The VA only looks for 1 honorable discharge on your record to qualify you for use of your Post 911 GI Bill. No worries. When you apply for your benefits packet send in your dd214 and all other documants they ask for and you will be approved provided you have at least one honorable discharge in your service record.
I agree with those who had posted that drills are a ridiculous waste of time. I stopped going as I need to go away a whole weekend due to the distance just for me to sit around. I have a full time job plus little kiddies to take care of. My husband is active duty so its all on me. All I get is the monthly certified letters. I've exceed the UAs. Can I ask for a OTH?
First- when you get your OTH you don't even get a DD-214. You get order's saying you were separated under AR 135-91 failure to participate or unsatisfactory participant. Second- when I applied for jobs with big banks, accounting firms, and brokerages I just brought my most recent DD-214 which was honorable. You only get a DD 214 when you are separated from Active Duty. Point being- if you served in Iraq or Afghan honorably, thank you for your service. No one will ever try to take that away from you. Driving to drill to sit with your thumb up your a** isn't appealing to anyone. No employer will likely care about the OTH from the Reserves, and there really isn't any documentation to go along with it.
I agree. My case is the same. After serving in Iraq and came back to do the drilling bs, it was pointless. No one there even was deployed before and I learned nothing new. Waste of time
i was in the marine reserves, told my unit i was moving to florida, they told me i was good to go. i got to FL and they told me i needed to move back so i said screw it for 8 months. got the money to move back and drilled for 4 months before i got my OTH (was in the reserves for 4 years) i wanted to know when i finish my bachelors degree, can i apply with diplomatic security service or CIA? and if not then would going law enforcement for awhile weigh out that mistake I made years ago? (final question about trying to go officer in a different service? somehow i think the answer to that one is a NO)
I received an OTH discharge from the ARMY reserve's for not going to drill (My unit was 250 miles from my HOR). Not sure how I even ended up in that unit. Anyway, I served honorably in IRAQ and all my training I received honorable discharge dd214's. When I applied for a job with a prestigious accounting firm I brought my honorable discharge DD214's and told them I received an OTH from the reserves for not attending drill. No one cared...not one bit... The ARMY Reserves is a joke, all my time in there I realized how little you actually do. I plan on appealing my OTH because I had a long email chain to my Commander asking for a hardship discharge because I lost money attending drill. Back to the point tho- no one cares about the reserves, as long as you have an honorable discharge dd214 just show that to your employer. I dont even think there is a paper record of your service if you werent activated.
So I'm reciving and oth for missing too many drills. I found them pointless spending all day walking around doing hurry up and wait was pointless. My unit wouldn't transfer me to active. After reciving the oth is there any chance on even getting back into any branch of the military?
Back in the 1980's I joined the Marine Reserves right out of high school to get a lousy $1,000 per year for college. I had to go in the infantry to get the money, what a mistake! Like a lot of Marines, I came from a pretty dysfunctional family, mom was nuts and dad was an alcoholic. I was really just trying to improve myself, get an education, joining the Corps was my ONE mis-step in that process.
I was in the Reserves in Detroit and it was awful. During drills we would literally sit in a classroom for 8 hours breathing the second hand cigarette smoke of the other 30 guys smoking in the room. In the field, it was not different. I was always stuck in a "fighting hole" with a chain smoker. Many of the guys in the unit HAD to join the Corps or go to jail...so the judge told them.
I had asthma as a kid but had done fine as an adult, first class PFT and all that. Anyhow, the smoke got to me, I would wheez and gasp for air after a few hours of breathing the smoke.
I got a doctor's note saying I couldn't be exposed to this, the CO was a real hard arse and saw this a me trying to get out (I was but my condition was real). So, they began treating me like crap, a "shit bird" as they called it, I stopped going to drills and enrolled in college full time, I just borrowed some money and received a large sum in Pell Grants because we were pretty poor. Looking back, I should have hired a lawyer to get me out of the Marines, but I didn't have the money.
I finished college, received a masters degree and have done quite well in life. The OTH never held me back at all. Just leave that question blank if it even appears on a job application. Don't let it hold you down if you have an OTH. I used to teach high school and I used to always think back to being in the Corps when my 17 & 18 year old students would act goofy. I was their age when I signed my life away to the Marines and shook my head at how dumb I was.
Smoking is now BANNED in all public places here in Michigan. Hard to believe people used to be able to sit and blow smoke in others faces......wow!
I don't hate the military, I wish I had waited until I was at least 25 years old to join, and I wish I had joined the Army or Air Force where a little brains was a bit more appreciated.
I would have loved the Military Police.....oh well, that's the way it goes. Again, don't let your OTH hold you down. Put it behind you and move on.
I was a reservist with the USMCR and got an OTH for missing drills. Right now I'm in college and have had several jobs doing security at night while I finish school, and never had to mention any military service. Financial Aid covers all of my school costs (not only do I qualify for the Pell grant which is basically an extra $4000 a year that I don't have to repay, but also qualify for the "California Board of Governors Fee Waiver" which covers 100% of my tuition costs... so the fact that I don't get the GI Bill hasn't hurt me at all). All you have to do is fill out the FAFSA like everyone else. Now I'm halfway done with school now and everything seems to be going just fine. If you have an OTH discharge, don't despair. If you can avoid getting one, I'd suggest sticking it out, because it keeps all those federal job options open and allows you to put the service on a resume. But if it's already done, just pick yourself up and go to school. It'll be fine.
Thank you for your post anonymous. it puts my mind at ease some. can u get jail from under oth conditions from drill? I have a great career I have under my belt and am not planning on leaving there. can they put me in jail for missing drills and getting that discharge?
Hey guys I've missed 12 drill days from the end of 2012into 2013. I got letters saying I am getting processed for under other than honorable conditions. I was driving 2 hours each way to drills that were pointless. I have a full time job and two young girls and my wife to take care should I be worried about losing my job or worse jail?!?!?! Please any response will be greatly appreciated. I fear the wellness of my family. and no I have never deployed. only reserves joined in 2011.
Hey, I am a united states Marine Corps Reservist Administrations Specialist (E-3). They taught us in Admin school that reservist do not get jail time for missing drills and getting an OTH, You will get busted down and get an OTH that is all. Active duty deserters are at risk of jail time though if their C.O. chooses to issue a warrant for their arrest, But this does not happen to reserve, I to am being processed for administrative seperation for missing too many drills, Drills is a waste of my damn weekend, I dont do shit, All I do is sit around with my thumb up my ass for a whole weekend. And no you wont lose your job. My reserve unit doesnt even know where I work. I didnt tell them because I didnt want my dickhead 1stSgt. to sabotage my job my telling them I didnt come to drill. But I doubt you will lose your job especially if you are a good worker.
Hey guys, I received an OTH (long story) from the reserves but I served 13 months active duty with an Honorable discharge. I complted 80% of my contract, do I qualify for any benefits? I am about to receive my bachelors in electrical engineering and I have an interview with USAA, would they be able to use the OTH against me or even discriminate me because of it? Or any company for that matter? I live in Texas BTW.
(Long story): i moved to another city but the unit close was "full" and I couldn't transfer so it was expensive to travel back and forth and I found it pointless since all we did was police call the compound every day twice a day and make sure the vehicles had everything on the list of requirements. We only went to the field once in the year and 8 months after I returned from Iraq.
Hey guys, I've missed several drills because I have moved out of state and frankly find it waste of time to go. My question, however, is will the MP's come looking for me or will I just get a letter in the mail saying I'm being discharged? Is it best to just call my unit and request separation or should I just allow time to handle it?
Hey, Im a Admin Lance Corporal in the Marine who also quit going to drill because it is a waste of time and have better things to do. No the MP's will not come for you, they dont handle UA reservist the same way that they handle active deserters. You will just get an OTH and get busted down. That is all.
I'm in the same situation. I've received over 9 "U's" in a year for missing drills and was sent paperwork saying that i'm being removed from the army with "Other Than Honorable" discharge. However from what i've read on this site (& having an Honorable Discharge from active duty ) this will not affect me. But no, MP's will not come looking for you. If anything, they'll send you a certified letter saying you're getting the boot.
I will eventually receive a OTH discharge for missing too many drills. Is it still possible to find a job as a paramedic? I've just got certified. Whether it is a third party service or fire department.
Will the fact that I served in the military show up in a background check?
I am in the Army Guard, never missed a drill, but i own my own business and this drilling is killing me. I lose so much money and worse yet, i need face time with customers on weekends. I've been in since 2010, but i am getting the itch to just stop drilling. From reading these blogs it seems like I would just get an OTH. Is there anything else i am missing? Please help if you can, never been deployed, just went on a extended AT to Africa
I transfer states and was given an unit. I live about 5 hrs from the unit and I live in a different state. I talk to the ist coordinator and was given the choice to transfer to my sate that I live that has an unit 2 miles from me, however the unit that I suppose to belong to that I never went to has taken it upon themselves to discharge me for the misunderstanding. what options do I have if I have any. I been in 5 years and I have a great drill record along with an active duty record and a deployment on me. I feel like they are screwing me over. I live in SC and the unit in question is in NC
The best bet you have is to appeal it. With the discharge paperwork that they should send you you are supposed to receive a letter that tells you your options. I would also suggest going to JAG or IG. It seems like your unit is retarded and you have a basis to fight it.
I haven't received any discharge paperwork aside from an emailed memorandum stating that I am now a PV1 and am being kicked out of the Army Reserves with an OTH. My problem is that I am VA Disabled at 60% for PTSD and injuries sustained during active duty. I need to know if this will take my disability away or if I can fight it somehow. This is my main income and would leave me almost destitute if I lost it. What can I do? I need help! :(
If you still have your DD214 from your active duty time, showing the accumulative time you served on AD, then you're fine. I use my Post 9-11 GI Bill for school and I always send them my recent DD-214 with my Honorable discharge on there (and I'm pending OTH). And either way, when you leave the reserves, you don't get a final DD-2214 (those are only for active duty time). Hope this helps!
hi so ive been in since 2010 long story short i joined because my ma said shed kick me out again if i didnt and i was only 17 i tried to stick to it but i get sick a lot i mean hospital sick so needless to say ive now missed over too many days i havent recieved anything in the mail yet how does the discharge process work fot oth do i have to go up there also how would i go about turning my stuff in id really like it if someone would write me back please
I recently moved to the midwest from the west coast for a new federal job. My MOS does not exist within 200 miles of my area, so I was trying to transfer to the IRR. However, there are other units within commuting distance. Can the Army require me to reclass? I am just biding my time until I can get out, so IRR seemed like a decent choice. An OTH doesn't bother me, as long as it doesn't affect my federal civilian job (no specific security clearance is required, but I will speak with our security officer at work about the OTH soon). Any thoughts on maintaining my federal position? And any input on if they can require me to reclass or not. If not, I think I should have an clean route toward the IRR.
I'm with all of you who say fuck the reserves. I'm about done with it.this isn't what I thought being in the usmcr would be like.
I got Annual Training on the 15th (6-15-13) and I made up my mind on not going back. If I don't go will they treat it different because it's a regular weekend or what. I would really appreciate it if someone answers my ?
To Kory: No it will not! I have a OTH and one Honorable Discharge. As long as you claim the stuff from your first discharge you are fine. Also Employers are no longer allowed to ask about your discharge type! give them the member form that does not show your discharge type! this is per The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP), the Veteran's Administration (VA) and the Department of Labor (DOL) positions
I stopped showing up to drill back in 2005, although I never received/signed any discharge papers I assumed I got an OTH. However, since then I have graduated with my bachelor of science in Economics and have held positions in the private sector. I recently just applied for a position with the IRS as a contact rep. I know this is a federal job and was wondering if this would hinder my chances of receiving an offer of employment???? Anybody that could answer this would be very much appreciated
I got a OTHD a few years back. I thought it was going to ruin any chances of me making something of myself. Considering I live right outside of DC, majority of the employers here work with the government and require clearances. Not the best of situations. Anyway, I got my bachelors in IT and also acquired another IT certificate in my field. This year I applied to a large, private, networking-related company. I was completely honest on the application, yet the only thing they asked regarding my vet status was my discharge date. My first job out of school I am making over $80k a year. Maybe not a lot to many people on here, but definitely not the fast food job that people will make you think you are limited to. If I can get an quality IT job right near DC, so can you. Just work your ass off, as though you have something to prove. Additionally, this years numbers show that government employees make around 34% less than private employees. I wouldn't be too hard on yourself about missing out on their open positions.
I served in the Marine Corps reserves, fulfilled my six year obligation, but what good did that really do for me? Looking back, I compare what would have happened if I quit attending drills. Maybe have gotten an OTH instead of an HONORABLE but in the end, they both lack benefits in the reserves because most VA benefits are based on ACTIVE DUTY requirements. So I ask, who was smarter? The guy getting out of drills, or me completing my military obligation and STILL NOT HAVING VA BENEFITS? The only benefits I see are from the STATE benefits such as cheaper concealed hand gun license instead of paying 140 bucks, it only cost me 25. I can get Marine license plates, I can put a veteran designation on my drivers license, I can get FUNERAL HONORS but no burial in a VA cemetery. (UH?) I cannot use VA HEALTHCARE, I cannot use VA HOME LOANS, I cannot use anything educational, so I ask again, what good did an HONORABLE do for me in the Reserves?
HEY GUY'S ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! I served in bat for 6 yrs, got seperated honorably an ended up joinin the reserves because i missed the uniform an the guys. Little did i know reserves is nothing like active, especially for what my prior MOS was but i should have known, my decisions were clouded by missing the atmosphere i was constantly in. In the reserves it is a complete waste of time an government money and i had a full time job on the civ side so i missed a few drill an now i recieved a letter saying i am being discharged with OTH. I am about to graduate college with a masters in coputer science and already have my bach in electrical engineering. Iv been interning a while an plan on applying to NASA and SpaceX. Will this ridiculous OTH discharge from the reserves after my active duty service impede on me achieving my dream job!? PLEASE HELP GUY'S!!!!
I received a OTH discharge from the Marine Corps reserves for missing too many drills. I want to upgrade it and re-enlist back into the Marines active duty. Is it possible?
So I'm currently in a position where the National Guard is not working out for me due my physical conditions that are service connected 100% from my Honorable 8 years of active duty service in the Army. The National guard is sandbagging me with their horrible evaluation process, If I just say screw it and go for an OTH discharge from the AZ national guard, how will my disability, Post 912 GI-Bill, VA home loan benefits be affected? I'm not being payed for drill due to be being compensated by the VA and doing normal duties just causes me pain, time, and frustration....Can anyone elaborate? I'm not looking for disability pay from the NG, I just want to be done with Military service and move on with my life.
I also received a OTH. They sent me a package a week ago. In this package it had papers for me to sign? And said I owed 1,700 dollars for gear? But I turned in all my gear. They know this. So either it's just part of the package they sent. Or they just want to screw with me. Any advice? Or experience with this package.
Was in the Marine Reserves a few years back and stopped showing up to drill like so many of you on here. Was dealing poorly with major depressive disorder at the time and drill felt like a joke. Like no one knew wtf was going on and all the junior marines were being yanked around by the chain. Anyways never got any paperwork or signed anything. Was never asked to return my gear which is strange bc i have serialized sappy plates etc. Never got a bill either. I owed 700 on my taxes last year though which was strange as I don't make enough money to owe money I should have gotten money. So I either made a mistake and didn't bother to see where I did them wrong or possibly the gov't is taking whatever I owed out of my tax return? Will my unit call when my contract would have expired (next year) looking for said gear?
I've made up my mind and after this Annual Training I'm quitting the Reserves. But what do I do with all of my gear? Do I mail it to them or drop it off?
Looking for a way out. I'm tired of going to drill and sitting around doing nothing wasting my time doing nothing of purpose. I generally get treated like shit there anyways right from the start. What would happen if I just stop going? I know it's a dumb thing to do but I'd much rather give them my gear and stop going.
I did that. When I went to turn in my CIF gear I told the NCO in supply that I was moving out of state and was transferring units and that I was ordered by new command to turn in gear. I also made sure to get a copy of the gear checklist sheet so that they can't green weenie you (for a small fee I lawyered up, gave evidence and got it cleared).
If you stop attending drill, unless your unit is activated, no cops or MPs will be after you (you might get a visit from squad leader if you gave address), they will just bust you down to E1 and then process you out. Reserves are treated a whole lot different than AD. In AD if you go UA you will get Court Martialed and sent to jail.
Drill is a waste of time especially for POG non-combatant units. Too many jobless NEET NCOs who don't have a real job or life outside of Reserves that are on a power trip. Their stacks are a joke.
I am about to get out of the military with a honorable discharge and use the post 9/11 G.I Bill. I was considering about transfering into the reserves just to maintain my healthcare coverage. If I got an OTH or dishonorable discharge, how will this affect my benefits? Would employers or VA benefits go off of my active duty discharge or my reserves discharge?
As long you have your DD214 from AD, you're good to go. Same goes for the Reserves, if your unit get activated and then deactivated you get your DD214 w/ HD. Show that to VA, they don't care, they go by what's on the paperwork.
If I have and honorable discharge army national guard but now getting other then honorable discharge from the army reserves does that effect my honorable discharge
Informed my 1 SGT in January that I had an issue with my AT in July because of a new job and a move to another state. He told me he didn't give a shit. Well... My AT is next week and I was able to get my orders to transfer from Army reserves to IRR in September to fulfill my last 2 years in the IRR. And I turned in all my gear to my supply NCO. If I don't show up to my AT next week, will they terminate my orders to IRR and give be an OTH?
I'm honestly done with the reserves. Just graduated from the U of A with a Civil Engineering Degree and ready to move on with life then sit in a f**king drill hall with power tripping kids.
Hey everyone. In 2009 I received and honorable discharge from active duty (Navy). I then transferred to the reserves and received an ad. sep. in 2010 for missing drills. Turns out I was drilling with the wrong unit for months and my actual unit obviously had me as UA. MY 1st class told me I would be getting papers in the mail informing me of my seperation and when I do just to bring it to him. However, foolish me got the papers and saw it as a way out of the issueless drilling (I repeatedly asked to go back active, always received a "no" answer), so I took it. A mistake I have recently been regretting. My questions are, does anyone know if this will impact my chances with the NYPD as I am meeting my investigator soon, and secondly; is there any way I would be able to re-enlist today in the Army if I tried? Thank you in advance for your help.
Hello, I popped hot on a drug test for marijuana in the reserves and will probably get an OTH discharge. However, I am currently using my Post 9/11 GI Bill to attend college. The idea was to slowly transition from Active to Civilian life and the Reserves would act as a buffer. Anyway, I have 6 years of active service and an Honorable discharge from them (which is the dd-214) I used to apply for my G.I. Bill. So my question is, once the reserves discharge me with whatever characterization will the new DD-214 superceed my previous if I don't reapply for my G.I. Bill or are they shit hot at shutting off benefits that they'll contact the VA directly? Any advice would be welcomed.
I was discharge from the US Navy Reserve now they send me a letter stating that i owe money for drill so they say that i did not attended which i have never miss drill what can i do to rebuttal this claim?
This blog is dedicated to prior service members who are seeking help with the challenges of receiving and OTH or other than honorable discharge after leaving the U.S. Armed forces. All helpful comments are encouraged. Negative comments will not be posted.

So what if there is a year gap in my employment because of a deployment? Do you think I can still leave my military service out?
DeleteYes, say you took time off for travel or something realistic that will explain the gap of time.

ReplyDeleteYes, get a lawyer, you may be able to get one for free from any number of vet organizations.
DeleteI recieved an OTH back in Mar. 2010. I have a job with a major Defense Contractor, and recieved a Security Clearance. For all those men/women who are worried about OTH for missing drills, and trying to get a decent job.....just be honest on your app.
ReplyDeletehey im going through the same situation and i came across your post and i have a few questions, if you dont mind.?
DeleteI popped on a piss test, i signed oth discharge papers back in january, how long will it take for them to finnally discharge me, n will they issue out a warrant for my arrest if i stop showing up to drill n can they reverse my oth to dishonorable if i stop showing up, i need wise advise
DeleteI am in the process of getting a discharge under OTH for missing too many drills and I'm fine with that, I just wanted to know if I could get a job as a high school teacher with it.
ReplyDeleteYes, I was a teacher. I have an OTH. I just left that box blank on the application.
DeleteI also worked at General Motors in the marketing department. OTH never held me back.
Hey guys!!!!
ReplyDeleteI received an OTH over missing drills from the Marine Reserves. If you are planning on having an upgrade your best shot is to General under honorable conditions. As a first step research your service's board online info, there you will be able to find apps of other service members and constumize your own for top success rate.
Here is the Navy's http://boards.law.af.mil/NAVY_DRB.htm
God fucking Bless, there is still hope!!!!!
Received an OTH for missing drills too, and was demoted to PV1 (2010). Can I re-enlist in the Army reserves? If so, after how many years?
ReplyDeleteAny replies would be much appreciated. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI am in the process of being put out the army reserves for missng drills.
ReplyDeleteCurrently waiting for my commander to determine my fate of an oth or not.
ReplyDeletei got a job with the department of justice with the bureau of prisons with an oth for missing drills they didnt care about about the reserves only active duty discharge
ReplyDeleteMy heart started to beat fast..I want to apply for federal corrections with the bureau of prisons..however I'm scared because I have an oth from the navy reserves....Are you sure they don't care about the reserves,,did you put it on your application??
DeleteAs most reservists know, its a complete joke!
ReplyDeleteI received an OTH from the marine reserves about 15 years ago. I have gone through several background checks for major employers and it has never been an issue. I quit drilling because I was being harassed for requesting mast against a senior nco. It was a miserable experience and I worried about it for a long time, but it never amounted to anything.
DeleteI havent been processed for an OTH yet, but ive made the decision to not go back to drill because I was forced into the reserves cause my brother was Active at the time and I didnt feel welcome because of some hickups. Ive been in for 4 years and Im not a bad person, im on the color guard, do extra drills, went to schools, and tried my best to be the best, but its not working out. From what ive read it doesnt show up on your record and I should be fine with getting jobs (already have one). Will this affect me later in life?
ReplyDeleteI went into the Reserves then had to move out of state when I asked for help finding a another unit they told me that was my responsiblilty so I found one and they didn't have room for me so I was given a oth discharge not only that but I recently filed taxes and the department of defense took 1287 dollars out of my return I was discharded dec 20 2010 I was also taken from a PFC to a Pv1 what can I do about the oth and the money they took
ReplyDeleteHow do OTH discharges show up on backround checks for employment? Does it show exactly why or does it just say "Misconduct" or whatever
ReplyDeletemy fiancé and I relocated for a job after he returned from deployment this past year and he told them he couldn't make drill. after making up two weekends he had missed they stopped letting him reschedule. he already has a wonderful job but we are worried on them revoking benefits and making him pay back what part of his bonus he received out of AIT. Will they garnish his wages until it gets paid back? should he file an appeal?
ReplyDeleteI work for a private security firm who gets contracts to go over seas, can I go with them even ttough they are government contracts?
ReplyDeleteI have a medical problem due to my knee and I just dont want to be in the guard anymore. do i just keep calling in?
ReplyDeleteI have been out from the Army on an honorable discharge for 2 years now.
ReplyDeleteYes you can use your DD214 from active duty to recieve your benefits.
DeleteI agree with those who had posted that drills are a ridiculous waste of time. I stopped going as I need to go away a whole weekend due to the distance just for me to sit around. I have a full time job plus little kiddies to take care of. My husband is active duty so its all on me. All I get is the monthly certified letters. I've exceed the UAs. Can I ask for a OTH?
ReplyDeleteI am going to get a oth for missing drills but my question is can anything more happen but the oth?
ReplyDeleteFirst- when you get your OTH you don't even get a DD-214.
DeleteI agree. My case is the same. After serving in Iraq and came back to do the drilling bs, it was pointless. No one there even was deployed before and I learned nothing new. Waste of time
Deletei was in the marine reserves, told my unit i was moving to florida, they told me i was good to go. i got to FL and they told me i needed to move back so i said screw it for 8 months. got the money to move back and drilled for 4 months before i got my OTH (was in the reserves for 4 years) i wanted to know when i finish my bachelors degree, can i apply with diplomatic security service or CIA? and if not then would going law enforcement for awhile weigh out that mistake I made years ago? (final question about trying to go officer in a different service? somehow i think the answer to that one is a NO)
ReplyDeleteI received an OTH discharge from the ARMY reserve's for not going to drill (My unit was 250 miles from my HOR).
ReplyDeleteSo I'm reciving and oth for missing too many drills. I found them pointless spending all day walking around doing hurry up and wait was pointless. My unit wouldn't transfer me to active. After reciving the oth is there any chance on even getting back into any branch of the military?
ReplyDeletei was in the usmc reserves and got a other than. (missing drills). Did i lose my right to get a firearm? This was 1998.
ReplyDeletethank you
No, having an OTH for missing drills does not disqualify you from owning a firearm.
DeleteJust want to vent. I received an OTH.
ReplyDeleteBack in the 1980's I joined the Marine Reserves right out of high school to get a lousy $1,000 per year for college.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your post anonymous. it puts my mind at ease some. can u get jail from under oth conditions from drill? I have a great career I have under my belt and am not planning on leaving there. can they put me in jail for missing drills and getting that discharge?
DeleteHey guys I've missed 12 drill days from the end of 2012into 2013.
ReplyDeleteHey, I am a united states Marine Corps Reservist Administrations Specialist (E-3).
DeleteHey guys, I received an OTH (long story) from the reserves but I served 13 months active duty with an Honorable discharge. I complted 80% of my contract, do I qualify for any benefits? I am about to receive my bachelors in electrical engineering and I have an interview with USAA, would they be able to use the OTH against me or even discriminate me because of it? Or any company for that matter? I live in Texas BTW.
ReplyDelete(Long story): i moved to another city but the unit close was "full" and I couldn't transfer so it was expensive to travel back and forth and I found it pointless since all we did was police call the compound every day twice a day and make sure the vehicles had everything on the list of requirements.
ReplyDeleteHey, Im a Admin Lance Corporal in the Marine who also quit going to drill because it is a waste of time and have better things to do. No the MP's will not come for you, they dont handle UA reservist the same way that they handle active deserters. You will just get an OTH and get busted down. That is all.
DeleteI'm in the same situation.
DeleteI will eventually receive a OTH discharge for missing too many drills. Is it still possible to find a job as a paramedic? I've just got certified. Whether it is a third party service or fire department.
ReplyDeleteWill the fact that I served in the military show up in a background check?
I am in the Army Guard, never missed a drill, but i own my own business and this drilling is killing me. I lose so much money and worse yet, i need face time with customers on weekends. I've been in since 2010, but i am getting the itch to just stop drilling. From reading these blogs it seems like I would just get an OTH. Is there anything else i am missing? Please help if you can, never been deployed, just went on a extended AT to Africa
ReplyDeleteI transfer states and was given an unit.
ReplyDeleteThe best bet you have is to appeal it. With the discharge paperwork that they should send you you are supposed to receive a letter that tells you your options. I would also suggest going to JAG or IG. It seems like your unit is retarded and you have a basis to fight it.
DeleteI haven't received any discharge paperwork aside from an emailed memorandum stating that I am now a PV1 and am being kicked out of the Army Reserves with an OTH. My problem is that I am VA Disabled at 60% for PTSD and injuries sustained during active duty. I need to know if this will take my disability away or if I can fight it somehow. This is my main income and would leave me almost destitute if I lost it. What can I do? I need help! :(
ReplyDeleteIf you still have your DD214 from your active duty time, showing the accumulative time you served on AD, then you're fine. I use my Post 9-11 GI Bill for school and I always send them my recent DD-214 with my Honorable discharge on there (and I'm pending OTH). And either way, when you leave the reserves, you don't get a final DD-2214 (those are only for active duty time). Hope this helps!
Deletehi so ive been in since 2010 long story short i joined because my ma said shed kick me out again if i didnt and i was only 17 i tried to stick to it but i get sick a lot i mean hospital sick so needless to say ive now missed over too many days i havent recieved anything in the mail yet how does the discharge process work fot oth do i have to go up there also how would i go about turning my stuff in id really like it if someone would write me back please
ReplyDeleteI recently moved to the midwest from the west coast for a new federal job.
ReplyDeleteI'm with all of you who say fuck the reserves. I'm about done with it.this isn't what I thought being in the usmcr would be like.
ReplyDeleteI got Annual Training on the 15th (6-15-13) and I made up my mind on not going back.
ReplyDeleteAny chance of reenlistment with a oth discharge from marine reserves with active honorable discharge
ReplyDeleteI stopped showing up to drill back in 2005, although I never received/signed any discharge papers I assumed I got an OTH.
ReplyDeleteI got a OTHD a few years back. I thought it was going to ruin any chances of me making something of myself. Considering I live right outside of DC, majority of the employers here work with the government and require clearances. Not the best of situations. Anyway, I got my bachelors in IT and also acquired another IT certificate in my field.
ReplyDeleteThis year I applied to a large, private, networking-related company.
ReplyDeleteHEY GUY'S ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!
ReplyDeleteAs long you have your DD-214 from Active, they the VA and employers don't care.
DeleteI am in the Army NG. They said one more awol and I will be discharged. What happens? Will i go to jail? Will they come look for me?
ReplyDeleteI received a OTH discharge from the Marine Corps reserves for missing too many drills. I want to upgrade it and re-enlist back into the Marines active duty. Is it possible?
ReplyDeleteSo I'm currently in a position where the National Guard is not working out for me due my physical conditions that are service connected 100% from my Honorable 8 years of active duty service in the Army.
ReplyDeleteI also received a OTH. They sent me a package a week ago. In this package it had papers for me to sign? And said I owed 1,700 dollars for gear? But I turned in all my gear. They know this. So either it's just part of the package they sent. Or they just want to screw with me. Any advice? Or experience with this package.
ReplyDeleteWas in the Marine Reserves a few years back and stopped showing up to drill like so many of you on here.
ReplyDeleteI've made up my mind and after this Annual Training I'm quitting the Reserves. But what do I do with all of my gear? Do I mail it to them or drop it off?
ReplyDeleteLooking for a way out. I'm tired of going to drill and sitting around doing nothing wasting my time doing nothing of purpose. I generally get treated like shit there anyways right from the start. What would happen if I just stop going? I know it's a dumb thing to do but I'd much rather give them my gear and stop going.
ReplyDeleteI did that.
DeleteIf you stop attending drill, unless your unit is activated, no cops or MPs will be after you (you might get a visit from squad leader if you gave address), they will just bust you down to E1 and then process you out.
ReplyDeleteAs long you have your DD214 from AD, you're good to go. Same goes for the Reserves, if your unit get activated and then deactivated you get your DD214 w/ HD. Show that to VA, they don't care, they go by what's on the paperwork.
DeleteVA is already inefficient as it is.
If I have and honorable discharge army national guard but now getting other then honorable discharge from the army reserves does that effect my honorable discharge
ReplyDeleteI have the same question man, I'm even using benefits from my Honorable discharge from active duty.
DeleteIf I have a honorable discharge and then receiving a oth discharge can I still get a government job or no
ReplyDeleteInformed my 1 SGT in January that I had an issue with my AT in July because of a new job and a move to another state.
ReplyDeleteI'm honestly done with the reserves.
ReplyDeleteHello, I popped hot on a drug test for marijuana in the reserves and will probably get an OTH discharge.
